Serpentwithfeet — “Bless The Telephone”

THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR:

Brooklyn-based singer Josiah Wise, better known as Serpentwithfeet, displays the gospel vocal training of his youth on his newest single, “Bless The Telephone.” The song serves as a touching reflection of his experience as a queer black man and exudes a spiritual level of sentimentality. “The joys of dating men, and dating Black men specifically. I’ve dated Black men and been in love with Black men, and there’s just a certain way I feel really taken care of and held by them,” Wise recently said.

Combo Chimbita — “Babalowo”

“Babalowo” comes from Combo Chimbita, a band made up of first-generation New Yorkers with Colombian roots. The song creeps in with an ominous sounding intro before letting loose with boundless energy and borderless musical interpretation. It’s all perfectly paced by the enchanting talents of lead vocalist Carolina Oliveras. “This song narrates a dream I had in which an Eggun (deceased person) assuaged my fears and encouraged me to continue down my path,” Oliveras said.

Widowspeak — “Everything Is Simple”

Widowspeak, the duo of singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas, is set to release their sixth studio album, “The Jacket,” on March 11. “Everything Is Simple” is first single from the record and displays the soothingly melodic calm of sonic predecessors like Mazzy Star and Cowboy Junkies. Lyrically, the song deconstructs the disagreements that can creep into a long-term relationship. According to the band, the result is a song about two partners “constructing their own versions of reality.”
