Portland police are asking for any information following a deadly shooting Sunday night that also left two young children injured. It was the second mass shooting in a notably violent holiday weekend.

According to the police bureau, officers responded around 10:37 p.m. to a report of a traffic collision on Southeast Foster Road near the intersection with 128th Street.

As police were heading to the area, they received further calls about gunshots. When they arrived, officers found a woman in a vehicle was dead from a gunshot wound, and a man and two children were injured. The three injured people were taken to local hospitals. The man is in critical condition but expected to survive, and the children are in stable condition, according to police.

Though the shooting investigation is in its early stages, police Lt. Nathan Sheppard confirmed the injured children were ages 1 and 5, and that the woman who died “appears to be the mother of the children.” The 1-year-old child was shot in the leg, and the 5-year-old was shot in the arm. Police believe the deceased woman was in a relationship with the man who was injured.

No one had been arrested for the shooting as of Sunday afternoon.

The shooting continued a violent stretch of days over the Presidents Day weekend. The Associated Press reported Portland officers responded to six shootings in a nine-hour period between Thursday night and Friday morning as the holiday weekend began.

The violence continued Saturday night as a mass shooting at a planned demonstration against police violence in Northeast Portland’s Normandale Park left one person dead and five others injured. The Oregonian/OregonLive first identified the deceased person in that shooting as 60-year-old June Knightly. People who had gathered for that demonstration told OPB a person from a nearby home confronted a small group of demonstrators along the edges of the park and quickly began shooting.

Portland police have not released any information about who the shooter was in the Normandale Park incident.

In a separate incident Saturday, acting Sgt. Zachary Kenney and Officer Reynaldo Guevara shot and killed a person during a disturbance call on Southwest Broadway Drive. People living in the area were told to shelter in place shortly before the shooting happened. The bureau has not released the identity of the person who was killed.

So far this year, Portland has recorded at least 206 shootings and 51 injuries on city streets. In 2021, the city saw at least 91 homicides, an all time record.
