Editor’s note: This story has been updated to say that a sheriff’s deputy shot a woman near the Lloyd Center on Oct. 5. The updates were made after a spokesperson for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office contacted OPB to note that early information released about the deputy’s involvement was not clear.

More than 24 hours after a Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a woman in Northeast Portland, a trickle of information has come out about the incident, which spanned several blocks around Lloyd Center and involved three crime scenes.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy with the transit division approached a man about a vehicle and “an altercation ensued.”

“A woman, also became involved, at which time the deputy fired shots,” the Thursday statement now reads.

“I can further add that the woman was injured by the deputy’s gunfire,” spokesperson Chris Liedle wrote in an email to OPB on Friday morning.

The statement says the woman was later treated for gunshot injuries.

After the shooting, the sheriff’s office statement said the man and the woman fled in a vehicle and were in a car crash several blocks away. The woman was transported to a hospital and treated for her gunshot injury and the man was taken into custody and also treated for injuries from the car accident, according to the sheriff’s office. Both are expected to survive, the sheriff’s statement said.

“The suspect’s reckless actions put many people in harm’s way,” Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese said in a statement.

He did not say what prompted the deputy to approach the man in the first place.

The Portland Police Bureau is leading the investigation.

The man and woman who allegedly fled from the deputy have not been named. Neither has the deputy who shot the woman.

In recent months, the Portland Police Bureau has declined to name officers who shoot people, citing threats to officers’ safety. The sheriff’s office did not say if they would follow suit. The deputy has been placed on critical incident leave pending the investigation, per department protocol.
