MUNYA — “Pour Toi”

French-Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Josie Boivin performs under the name MUNYA. In 2018 Boivin began work on what would become a series of three EPs each named after significant geographic places in her life. Her new single, “Pour Toi,” expands on that theme to include distance — the track is about speaking to a loved one who is far away. “Pour Toi” evokes a subtle dreamscape by emphasizing the tranquility of Boivin’s vocal take which is sung in both French and English and layered with a cool synth groove.

Big Red Machine — “Phoenix”

Big Red Machine, a supergroup consisting of The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, has released “Phoenix,” the opening track from their sophomore album “How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?” The song features singer Anaïs Mitchell and Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, who co-wrote and co-produced the song. Pecknold said in a statement, “Justin’s vocals and the beautiful chorus were already in place before I got my hands on it, so I felt my job melodically and lyrically was to set his entrance up in the best possible way.”

Boom Bap Project — “Rain or Shine”

Boom Bap Project is a collaborative effort from three Pacific Northwest natives: Karim (aka Nightclubber Lang), DJ Tre, and Destructo Destro. After a 14-year hiatus, the crew has just released the album “Return Flight.” It features this absolute banger called “Rain or Shine.” The emcees chop it up here with raw, clever lyrics that sound like they came straight from an underground rap battle stage. Accompanying those lyrical daggers is the perfectly crafted production of Portland’s own Trox. Boom Bap Project performs live during Portland Hip Hop Week on Aug. 20 at Lola’s Room.
