A Multnomah County grand jury cleared a Portland Police Bureau officer Monday of any potential criminal charges related to a July fatal shooting.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that the grand jury reviewed evidence in the case and found Officer Mina Cavalli-Singer acted lawfully when she shot and killed 19-year-old Jonathan Allen Worth this summer.
According to police statements, Cavalli-Singer was among officers who responded just after midnight on July 24 to reports of a man and woman physically fighting near Southeast 148th Avenue and Clinton Street. As officers attempted to arrest Worth, he fired a shot from a gun and Cavalli-Singer returned fire.
Worth died at the scene.
The shooting came during a particularly violent week for the bureau, as officers engaged in two other shootings that week, one of which was also fatal.
Portland police officers have shot nine people so far in 2022; four of those shootings were fatal. A fifth fatal law enforcement shooting in the city took place on Jan. 27, when a Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed 32-year-old Wesley Chance during a pursuit on Interstate 205 in Southeast Portland.
The deadly police shootings contributed to Portland’s record number of homicides for a second consecutive year. As of Nov. 30, the city had logged 93 killings, exceeding last year’s 92 homicides.
No Portland officers have been charged for their role in the agency’s nine shootings. Several are still under review.
